Growing basil is a rewarding experience that can be enjoyed by gardeners of all levels. With a few simple steps, you can have a thriving basil plant in no time.
1. Choose a sunny spot. Basil needs at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, so choose a spot in your garden or on your balcony that gets plenty of sun.
2. Prepare the soil. Basil prefers well-draining soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0. If you’re planting in a pot, use a potting mix specifically designed for herbs.
3. Plant your basil. Plant your basil seeds or seedlings about 6 inches apart. If you’re planting seeds, cover them with a thin layer of soil and water them gently.
4. Water your basil. Basil needs to be watered regularly, but be careful not to over water it. Water your basil when the top inch of soil is dry.
5. Fertilise your basil. Basil needs to be fertilised every two weeks with a balanced fertiliser.
6. Prune your basil. Pruning your basil regularly will help it grow bushier and produce more leaves. Prune off any flowers that appear to keep the plant from going to seed.
7. Harvest your basil. When your basil is about 6 inches tall, you can start harvesting the leaves. Pick the leaves from the top of the plant, leaving the bottom leaves to continue growing.

With these simple steps, you can have a thriving basil plant in no time. Enjoy the fresh flavour of homegrown basil in your favourite dishes!
