Mosquitoes borne diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya are becoming dangerous not only for the rural population, but also people living in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and other urban cities. Diseases caused by mosquitoes are one of the major public health concerns for state & local governments.

Plants that repel mosquitoes

Mother nature provides us many plants which are essentially mosquito repellents. These are plants that repel mosquitoes and fleas. You can also purchase  indoor plants  from a nursery that repel bugs for your kitchen garden. The aroma of the plant repels mosquitoes and other insects naturally. We will become familiar with some of such plants here.

Citronella

Many mosquitoes repellent liquids and coils are made of ingredients from this plant. It is a grass which can grow up to 5 or 6 feet emitting a strong aroma which naturally drives away mosquitoes. It can be grown from the seeds. If planted in a home kitchen garden , it is very helpful to keep mosquitoes away from home.

Lemon Balm

It is a member of the mint family which is also known as horsemint or bee balm. It is a tough plant and can grow in rough weather also without sunlight. It is a very aggressive growing plant and it grows quickly. Plant leaves can be used to brew herbal tea also.

Catnip

It is a great mosquito repellent plant and 10 times more effective than DEET which is a common ingredient in insect  and mosquito repellents.

Marigolds

This plant contains Pyrethrum which is used in many insect repellents. It is a decorative plant and it can be used in the borders of the garden or kitchen garden also. Making a companion plant of tomato will help to protect the tomato plant from bugs and insects.

Basil

It is a herb plant which is a natural mosquito repellent. Generally lemon basil or cinnamon basil is used to deter insects. It can be used as herb in various kitchen recipes also.

Lavender

It is a flowering plant with a soothing or calming scent. It can be used to make delicious herbal tea also.

Peppermint

Despite being a natural mosquito repellent, peppermint leaves can be rubbed on skin as ointment for bite relief. It is used in various beverages and kitchen recipes.

Garlic

We all know health benefits of eating garlic in our day to day food, but garlic plant also can be used to repel mosquitoes.

Pennyroyal

This flowering plant is natural mosquito repellent. In garden(s), it can be used to attract beautiful butterflies also.

Rosemary

It is also a flowering plant and mosquito repellent. It is used in various kitchen dishes also to add taste and aroma to food.

Geranium

Generally, it is planted in a hanging container and it is a flowering plant which also acts as a mosquito repellent.
